Whoever said that dieting needed to be a full time effort? Did you know that there is a way how to lose a pound a day while being able to take weekends off from the diet? Well, consider this: Many medical practitioners, dietitians, nutritionists, personal trainers, and health experts alike all agree that it is okay to cheat on your diet once in a while. If you follow healthy eating habits on Monday through Friday, why can’t you treat yourself to a little bit of an indulgence on weekends every once in a while?

Of course, it goes without saying that this allowance for weekend indulgence is not without its own limitations as well. You would have to follow some sort of guidelines, so that you aren’t on some ten thousand calorie free-for-all binge eating weekend. But the plain and simple fact is that life happens. You are always going to have parties. There are always going to be birthdays, weddings, holidays, and special occasions where you eat out and pig out. So you have to be able to make allowances for these types of situations in your life.

If you were to deprive yourself of being able to indulge in the foods that you crave, once in a while, in moderation, then you will go crazy. You will not be able to enjoy life. You will not be able to follow your diet without cheating on it. You have cravings, and you can try as you might to avoid fulfilling them. But that might actually backfire and work against you in the long term. Eventually the temptation to deviate from your strict diet will be so great that you will end up binge-eating and actually undermining your own dieting efforts.

Now, you might be wondering: If you diet strictly for 6 days out of the week and take a break from the diet on the 7th day, won’t you gain some of that weight back? Won’t it slow down or counteract your weight loss efforts from the previous 6 days?

The answer is a yes and a no. Yes, it would be detrimental if you overindulge on your day off from the diet. But if you have a couple of large meals on that day off, then no, it won’t hurt you in the least bit. Sure, strictly speaking from a calories-in-calories-out perspective, your caloric deficit will of course be lower on that day. But over the long term, it will pay off in terms of your overall weight loss objectives: You will be a lot more satisfied, knowing that you got to eat the foods you enjoy. This psychological boost will be enough to keep you motivated to stay focused on your diet during the rest of the days of the week.

If you can have that pizza or that slice of cake, or that fancy three-course dinner on Friday or Saturday nights, while the rest of the week, you watch your food intake, you will definitely come out ahead.
